Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Topometry

Head of the Department: Ruslan Huseynov

The Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Topometry was established as a separate structure according to the instruction of the Director General of the National Center of Oncology academician J.A.Aliyev in 2009. The necessity of that step was dictated by fast development of radiation therapy in the country, rapid growth of number of radiotherapy machines, the need to establish new appropriate support of high quality.

At present the department performs preplanning procedures for the patients, treatment planning for external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy, control of parameters of the radiotherapy equipment and planning software. One of major duties of the department is development and implementation of a comprehensive Quality Control and Quality Assurance Program covering preplanning, planning and performing radiation therapy.

The department has at it’s disposal computerized treatment planning software ECLIPSE from VARIAN Medical Systems, XiO from CMS, brachytherapy treatment planning BRACHYVision from VARIAN Medical Systems, dosimetry equipment from PTW: clinical dosimeters UNIDOS, Farmer, Roos, plane-paralelle and well type ionization chambers, MEPHİSTO MC2 beam scanning system, different types of water phantoms.

Number of scientific researches are done at the department:

  • Development of new methods of planning for External Beam Radiation Therapy.
  • Development of new methods of planning for Brachytherapy.
  • Development and implementation of a comprehensive Quality Control and Quality Assurance Program for new radiotherapy equipment and methods of irradiation.
  • Optimization of treatment methods.

Training activities for stuff of the other radiotherapy clinics of the country are also carried out at the department. The training is performed by qualified and experienced radiation oncologists, medical physicists and radiation therapists of the department.

The Department of Medical Physics of the National Center of Oncology is a unique place in the entire country having at it’s command all necessary technical and theoretical resources to train young generation of medical physicists, dosimetrists and RTTs.
The employees of the department are active members of different European and American associations for medical physics.
