Department of Thoracic Oncology

Establishment of the Department of Thoracic Oncology in National Center of Oncology was planned since times of former Soviet Union. Education and training of specialists started in 1985 in All-Union Scientific Oncological Center. But the department in Baku was opened only in 1992 and the initial steps in the treatment and diagnostics of lung cancer were done.

At that time the first successful results in the surgery for lung cancer were achieved. Of course as always results of surgical treatment depended not only of surgeons professionalism but also on adequate anaesthesiological support what required organization of high level specialists’ training.

Every successful surgical operation inspired personnel to achieve new victories. Following surgery modalities used in lung cancer as atypical resections, lobectomies, bilobectomies, extended and combined pneumonectomies and also surgical removal of mediastinal tumors were performed in department. Starting from 2001 in National Center of Oncology we began performing of surgical treatment for esophageal carcinoma. Since formation time more than 800 lung cancer patients, 250 esophageal carcinoma patients were operated in the department.

The main principle of department’s work consists of the diagnostics and treatment of patients with thoracic pathologies. It is well known how difficult to make diagnosis of lymph-proliferating diseases with mediastinal lymph node involvement, mediastinal type lung cancer, thymus tumors. Today due to “trucut” biopsy method it is possible to gain histological verification for these patients without performing of diagnostic thoracothomy. Since 2010 we also perform thoracoscopic biopsies. And after making correct and exact diagnosis patients could be referral to appropriate departments of National Center of Oncology.

Scientific works of the department. Following scientific researches on subject of “Epidemiological specifics of lung cancer in Azerbaijan Republic”, “Improvement of lung cancer treatment results” were carried out and published. An ongoing research is “Assessment of lymph node dissection efficacy in the improvement of esophageal carcinoma treatment”. There are two scientific officers except of head of the department work here. Head of the department – Soltanov A.A.
