Pathocytomorphological Laboratory

The Patocytomorphological laboratory works from the date of establishing of the National Centre of Oncology since 1941. The first head of the laboratory was (until1957) B.A.Babayev. Until 1973 the head of Laboratory was  B. M. Abdullayev, until 1980 was E. M. Garayev, from 1980 until 2013 the head of Laboratory was Vagif Alizadeh.

At the present time the head of Laboratory is PhD. Osmanov S.S.

Main works principles of the department

The main goal of the pathological laboratory is to investigate the pathological processes in tissue and organs, to determine diagnostical, prognostic values in the tumorous processes. The research processes performs by five methods – histology, cytology, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and in-situ-hybridization.

1. Histological analysis – investigation of the tissue and organs for the diagnostic purposes.

2. Cytology analysis  – investigation of the body cavity fluids, smears and fine needle aspiration

3. Immunohistochemistry analyses – diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutical (to determine targets in target therapy) molecular analysis, performed full automatically using antigen-antibody reaction

4. In-situ-hybridization – prognostic and therapeutic (target therapy), full automated analysis, based on the gen hybridization technology

There are seven doctors, one biologists, eight technicians, four preparatorists and three small personals works in our laboratory.

In the last 5 year the pathocytomorphological laboratory was equipped with the worldwide standard brands machines like Leica, Zeiss, Ventana, Thermo Science. There are 2 tissue processing stations used in the laboratory (Excelsior ES, Pathcentre – ThermoScience Germany).

These devices automatically pass the tissue fragments throw formalin, alcohol, xylene and paraffin. After this, the tissue used for preparing of the tissue blocks in the embedding stations (2 Leica, EG 1160 andone ThermoScience, TES 99, Germany).

The paraffin blocks are cuts in the modern microtomes (two- HM325 and two- HM340E,

ThermoScience,Germany).

After this, the slides are stained in the autostainers (two autostainers- Varistain Gemini ES, ThermoScience- Germany).

The stained slides are coverslipped in the special machines (two- ClearVueThermoScience,Germany) and given to pathologist.

There are intraoperational pathological consultations performed in our laboratory, supported by 2 cryostats (HM550 və HM525, ThermoScience, Germany). With this machines it is possible during 15 minutes to freeze tissue, make 4-5 mkm section, stain it and analyze.

For the cytology materials used high speed rotating centrifuge (Lab.Centrifuqa, Germany). The cytology smears are stained in the autostainer (ThermoScience, Germany). Also there is ThinPrep machine used for liquid baced cytology (Pap-smears)

In some cases for the differential diagnosis it needs additional immunhistochemical and hystochemical analysis. There are plentiful immunhistochemical and histochemical markers used in laboratory. Also we use vary sensitive and high-end immunhistochemical analyzers.

The  Ventana BenchMark GX immunhistochemical autostainer is used for the full automated staining by varying markers 20 slides.

The second immunohistostainer is more powerful and modern –the Ventana BenchMark ULTRA can stain at the same time 30 slides with random access. There is also CİSH (Chromogenic in situ Hybridisation) analysis can be performed on this.

For the digital archiving and telepathology we use Ventana iScan CoreoAu slide scaner.

For the archiving of the slides according to the modern standards used special archiving shelf.

The pathologists use high quality microscopes (10 – Zeiss, Germany). For the training purposes there are one microscope with double oculars ( Scope 1, Zeiss, Germnay) and one with four oculars (Scope 1, Zeiss, Germany ) microscopes are in use

The high quality equipment of the laboratory gives possibility of the preparation of high quality slides and to make more precise diagnosis.

The doctors, works in the laboratory, have been studied and pass special courses in theTurkey, Austria, Russia.
