Department of Head and Neck Tumors



Department of head and neck tumors was formed in 2009. Earlier the Department was under the Department of General Oncology, National Center of Oncology. Currently, Department of head and neck tumors has 7 doctors: 1 Doctor of Medical Sciences, 3 Candidates of Medical Sciences, and 20 employees of the mid-level and Junior medical staff.

Surgery operations are performed on tumors of the larynx, pharynx, oral and nasal cavity, upper and lower jaw, thyroid, salivary glands, skin of head and face at a high level. Laryngeal cancer is the most common disease among head and neck tumors in Azerbaijan. Patients with this diagnosis are considered the most serious. Therefore, the most effort and attention are paid to them. Total laryngectomy and laryngeal resection for laryngeal tumors are performed in Department.

In the postoperative period, patients undergoing laryngectomy are put voice prostheses and it helps psychiatric rehabilitation for patients.Also, radical and extended surgery for tumors of the parotid, submandibular and sublingual salivary glands are performed in department. Such operations are included parotidectomy, resection of the salivary glands, extirpate and reconstructive surgery.

Parotidectomy for tumors of the parotid  glands are carried out only with the help of neuromonitor.With the help of this device, facial nerves are easily detected during the operation and it makes possible to avoid the development of facial paresis in the postoperative period.

Hemistrumectomy and total strumectomy for tumors of the thyroid gland are widely used. In postoperation period, patients are necessarily under the control of an endocrinologist. Patients with some forms of thyroid cancer are conducted radioisotope treatment with radioactive I 131. Extended operations in cancer of the esophagus and esophagoplasty with pipes made of a stomach which recently take a special place are conducted in department.

Radical operations for tumors of the nasal cavity, nasal passages and nasopharynx are carried out in department. Especially, extended and reconstructive operations for tumors of the maxillary sinus and juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma are widely performed.

Some patients with tumors of mouth, tongue and lips are performed various resection of tongue and lips. One of heavy contingents of the patients is tumors of upper and lower jaw and radical and reconstructive surgery are performed for such patients. Prosthetic devices and the equipment made in Europe are used in operation.

Surgical operations on tumors of skin of head and face are widely performed and such formations are removed cosmetically. All operations are performed in surgery corps which meets all international standards.All equipment of the operational block and reanimation department made in  European   allows patients to quickly recover in the postoperative period.
